WR Steve Smith was activated from the physically unable to perform list, and ran a few routes during individual drills this morning.
That's not to say he's going to take any contact soon, as they want to make sure that broken left arm is ready for the regular season opener. Panthers coach John Fox said he wasn't even compelled to play Smith in the preseason, since the goal is to have him in New York on Sept. 12.

Smith broke his arm playing flag football last month, an injury that typically takes two months to fully heal. He has been working with trainers regularly in Carolina, according to a team source, and could be back in time to take part in the Panthers' final preseason game, at Pittsburgh on Sept. 2.

Panthers star Steve Smith suffers broken arm 6/21/2010 10:49:00 AM
Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith broke his left arm Sunday playing flag football and has already had surgery to insert a plate. Smith was reaching for a pass that went over his head and when he fell, tried to catch himself with his left arm. He broke a bone near the same area where he broke the arm late last season against the New York Giants.

In a surprise unsolicited call to WFNZ-AM’s Mac Attack program on Monday morning, Smith said he hopes the team finds a player either through the draft or free agency who can take over that role and allow him to do other things in the offense over the next few seasons. Smith, entering his 10th NFL season, turns 31 later this year.

Steve Smith saw his first preseason action of 2009 after missing two games with a shoulder injury. His physical, confrontational style hasn't changed a bit. Smith blasted Ravens cornerback Domonique Foxworth out of bounds with a big block on Carolina's first play.Smith had two catches for 37 yards.

Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith made a surprise return to practice Friday morning, four days after suffering a right shoulder injury. Smith was dressed in full pads for the workout and began running drills with the other receivers after stretching. At one point he was waving both arms above his head while talking to a teammate, a welcome sight for a team that has little depth behind its four-time Pro Bowl selection.

Smith missed last weeks game with a shin injury, but participated in all of Wednesdays practice. "Im getting better, Smith said. Sore a little bit, nicked up. If Im able to go, Ill go. Carolina receiver Steve Smith missed the Green Bay game because of a bruised left shin, but is likely to play against New Orleans on Sunday. "I think there's a much better chance (of his playing) this week than say, later in the week last week," Panthers coach John Fox said. Of the hip problem Smith was listed with early last week, Fox said, "He did have a hurt hip at one point, yes," without elaborating. When Smith was asked if he would be able to play, he said, "Today's Monday, so I don't know. I feel better this Monday than I did last Monday."
