Smith now 49ers starting quarterback
10/26/2009 1:25:00 PM

As expected, Singletary named Alex Smith the quarterback starter for Sunday's game in Indianapolis, the 49ers' second straight against an AFC South opponent that can put a lot of points on the board. Singletary admitted that "We really didn't know what we were going to get when (Smith) went out there." Indeed, Shaun Hill was the known commodity and the safer choice, and that's why he won the job to start the season.   Source: sacbee.com

Alex Smith's confidence makes a triumphant return
6/25/2009 8:46:00 AM

That 49ers coach Mike Singletary had his players go through two-a-day practices for a stretch earlier this month only bolstered Alex Smith's confidence. His right arm - finally - had made a triumphant return. General manager Scot McCloughan recently said Smith looked better than he had at any point in his NFL career. He also is in the best situation of his career  Source: sacbee.com

49ers undecided on QB's Hill, Smith
6/22/2009 9:19:00 AM

Even when Shaun Hill was winning games for the team last year, he would often struggle mightily in Wednesday's practice and then pull things together in Friday's session. It leaves the 49ers coaching staff with a tricky decision if Alex Smith continues to be the better quarterback when training camp opens.  Source: sfgate.com

The month of June belonged to Alex Smith.
6/12/2009 12:37:00 PM

I'm not saying that he's ahead of Shaun Hill. The competition to be the starting quarterback actually is a secondary concern. The bigger news is that Smith's right shoulder appears fully healed, and that had to have been Smith's primary worry after two surgeries in the last two years. Smith's spirals are tight, his accuracy is good and he is showing a bit of the aggressiveness that's been missing from him since 2005. He's not perfect, of course.  Source: sacbee.com

49ers show faith in QB Alex Smith
2/28/2008 3:33:00 PM

The 49ers exercised a buy-back option in Alex Smiths contract that will keep the quarterback around for three more seasons. If they hadnt done so, Smith could have become a free agent after this year. (Eli Manning and the Giants went through a similar process last year). It just goes to show that we have faith in him, McCloughan said. Hes our guy. Smith is recovering well from his December shoulder surgery.  Source: sacbee.com
