Mendenhall needs to seize starting opportunity
10/27/2009 9:04:00 AM

Curious minds want to know why Rashard Mendenhall won't take the Steelers' starting job and run with it. Why doesn't Mendenhall protect the football, especially around the goal line? Why does he shy away from contact despite weighing a muscular 225 pounds? Every time Mendenhall fumbles or doesn't take a defender head-on, I'm reminded that he slipped to the 23rd pick in the first round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He was projected to go much higher, which is why the Steelers didn't hesitate drafting him even though they didn't personally interview him or dig deeply into his background because never in their wildest imagination did they think he would be there. The "hot hand" that coach Mike Tomlin said last week kept Mendenhall ahead of Willie Parker on the depth chart cooled off considerably against Minnesota.  Source: pittsburghlive.com

Mendenhall has illness that puts his status in doubt
10/16/2009 9:00:00 AM

The Steelers sent running back Rashard Mendenhall home Thursday because of an illness, putting into question how much he will be able to play Sunday against the visiting Browns. Mendenhall has started the past two games for the injured Willie Parker (turf toe) and rushed for 242 yards and three touchdowns. If the illness is a lingering one and limits Mendenhall in the 1 p.m. game, the Steelers will probably be able to lean on Parker.  Source: pittsburghlive.com

Mendenhall could start tonight vs. Cards
8/13/2009 11:30:00 AM

Mendenhall could start because Willie Parker missed several days of practice this week with what was described as back spasms. "I expect the jump from him that I expect from all second-year players to take," Tomlin said. "This is his second lap around the track in terms of being a professional athlete and pro football player. ... He acts like a guy who has been here before, a guy who is ready to burst onto the scene, a guy who is willing to put his hand in the pile and help us win."  Source: post-gazette.com

"Mendenhall must sit out Super Bowl"
1/31/2009 11:47:00 AM

"Injury is not keeping Rashard Mendenhall from playing in Super Bowl XLIII. Injured reserve is. Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson said Mendenhall's broken shoulder has healed enough for him to resume practicing and playing. The problem is the Steelers put him on injured reserve in September, ending his season."  Source: "chicagotribune.com"

#23 Pittsburgh selects RB Rashard Mendenhall
4/26/2008 2:59:00 PM

The Steelers got a gift. Rashard Mendenhall is a terrific back who wasn't beat up with a lot of carries at Illinois. He's a 5-foot-11, 225-pound back who likes to hammer it up inside. He gained 1,681 yards last year for the Illini, who went to the Rose Bowl. The Steelers can't believe their good fortune. This is a top-notch pick.
