Mark Sanchez began the next phase of his rehab for his surgically repaired left knee. The Jets’ franchise quarterback ran on a treadmill Thursday for the first time since his arthroscopic procedure on Feb. 17, the team confirmed.

Jets QB Mark Sanchez wrote on his Twitter page Wednesday afternoon that surgery on his left knee was a success. Sanchez, who described the surgery to stabilize the patella ligament in the knee as "minimally invasive,'' will be sidelined approximately two months. He has said he'll "definitely" be ready for the start of training camp in July.

To nobody’s surprise, Jets coach Rex Ryan officially named Mark Sanchez as the starter for Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons. Sanchez, who suffered a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee two weeks ago, shared first-team practice reps with Kellen Clemens on Wednesday and Thursday before taking all the snaps Friday.

Initial tests revealed Jets QB Mark Sanchez has a sprained posterior cruciate ligament, and if he can handle the pain, he would be able to play Dec. 13 at Tampa, a source close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter on Friday morning. Sanchez sprained his right knee Thursday night in the Jets' 19-13 win against the Buffalo Bills.

Mark Sanchez to start Jets' vs. Ravens 8/16/2009 10:03:00 AM
Rex Ryan announced Sunday that Sanchez would open under center against the Ravens in the nationally televised game on Aug. 24. Ryan previously determined that Kellen Clemens would start the preseason opener against St. Louis on Friday and the two would flip-flop against Baltimore. Sanchez came into the 23-20 loss with 28 seconds left in the first quarter, and threw a 48-yard pass to David Clowney on his opening play. He completed three of four passes for 88 yards in one series.

Mark Sanchez was hardly a world beater, but the rookie quarterback took a significant step by taking some reps with the first team and outshining Kellen Clemens Sunday. Sanchez completed 6-of-9 passes in 11-on-11 drills -- mostly short, safe passes -- during a rainy morning practice, alternating first-team reps with Clemens for the first time. He was 6-of-17 with an interception in the afternoon session with the second-teamers.

Last year, the Jets had a 38-year-old QB (Favre); this year, they probably will rely on a 22-year-old QB (Sanchez). The Jets traded up to get the Southern Cal product with the fifth pick in the draft, but new coach Rex Ryan has promised Clemens that he'll get a shot, too. (The Jets and Sanchez also agreed to a five-year deal worth $50 million, with $28 million in guarantees.
