As important as Jamaal Charles is to this year’s offense, Kansas City does have an insurance policy. The Chiefs signed free-agent running back Thomas Jones during the offseason, and he worked this weekend with the first-team offense. Charles, meanwhile, ran with the backups.

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed free-agent running back Thomas Jones, who led the New York Jets to the AFC Championship Game last season and was the NFL's third-leading rusher. Jones' deal is for two years, NFL Network's Steve Wyche learned Tuesday from a source with knowledge of the situation.

Thomas Jones (New York Jets) is one of the NFL's most underrated running backs. His 60th straight start Sunday against the Bills is the longest current starting streak by a running back. Since 2005, he's second only to San Diego's LaDainian Tomlinson in yards rushing: 5,931 to 5,457.

Jets RB Thomas Jones to end boycott

Pro Bowl running back Thomas Jones, who hasn't participated in any of the Jets' voluntary workouts because he's unhappy with his contract, will end his boycott next week and report to practice Wednesday, according to his agent. The Jets' other disgruntled running back, Leon Washington, remains a no-show at off-season workouts, with no end in sight to his contract dispute. His agent, Alvin Keels, met with team officials Monday in Florham Park, but there wasn't much progress and no deal is imminent, sources said. Washington has one year left on his rookie contract.

Agent: Jets RB Thomas Jones will attend OTAs next week

Jones will rejoin his teammates next week after sitting out voluntary team activities while in a contract dispute, according to his agent. Drew Rosenhaus delivered the news via his Twitter page Tuesday. He didn't offer any further information whether an agreement on a restructured deal is in place or immediately answer an e-mail from The Associated Press seeking comment.

Thomas Jones was brought in last year to anchor the Jets' running game, and after a season in which he rushed for 1,119 yards but only one touchdown, the spotlight will again be on him - especially after the team signed linemen Alan Faneca and Damien Woody. But Jones is now part of a crowded backfield that became even more cluttered this week with the signing of former Raven Musa Smith, who, along with the returning Leon Washington and newcomer Jesse Chatman, could all vie for carries.
